Introduction to Communication

Is there any topic in the work place talked more about, excuse the pun, and done the least with than communication. With all of the books that have been written and all the training that exists on the subject the simple truth is communication comes down to one simple thing. And that one thing is communication is nothing more than an exchange of words between two people. Take all of the fancy linguistics and strategies away and the true essence of communication is an exchange of words between two or more people. The exchange can take many forms such as personal dialogue, email, text messaging, sign language, as just some examples. Regardless of the tool used the essence is the same, exchanging words where two or more people listen and respond.

So if communication is as simple as an exchange of words why does it become so hard?

To understand the difficulty in communication lets think about the human element that comes to play. If two robots were to discuss an idea with each other, no emotion or personalization would come into play. You would get a steady back and forth dialogue, both parties would listen and words would be shared equally. Both contributors would walk away having clear idea of what the other was saying. Human dialogue does not have this ability. There is a human element when two or more people engage in a conversation and that is what makes it so difficult.
